Attempts to forge a provincewide labour deal between the government and 42,000 Alberta teachers formally collapsed Wednesday, with the full swath of contract negotiations now falling back to 62 school boards and their local unions.

The Alberta Teachers’ Association had appealed directly to Premier Alison Redford late last month to intervene and accept their proposal. But the union said there’s been little movement since, even after a meeting Friday with Education Minister Jeff Johnson.
