A former Conservative B.C. MP has been fined for not complying with the province's lobbying law.

Jay Hill, who represented Prince George-Peace River for 17 years, had an initial administrative penalty of $2,500 reduced to $250 for filing a late registration, said a news release from the B.C. government on Friday.

Hill, who is now a consultant, was sanctioned for violating B.C.'s Lobbyist Registration Act (LRA).

"The deputy registrar found that by registering an undertaking to lobby when such was not the case, Hill undermined the goal of transparency in lobbying the LRA attempts to achieve," said Mary Carlson, deputy registrar of lobbyists, in a statement.

"A clear message must be sent to the general lobbyist community that the ORL expects lobbyists to take seriously their legal responsibilities for filing accurate and timely information."

Hill's initial fine was reduced because it was found his inadvertent error did not set out to "mislead anyone or conceal his activities," ruled Registrar of Lobbyists Elizabeth Denham.

Hill, a former House leader, won six federal elections for the Reform party, the Canadian Alliance and the Tories.
