Autumn Rose was a grade 12 student at Killarney Secondary School who fought the disease for years, undergoing three bone marrow transplants before dying last week.
"She was a fighter,” said school mate Aliana Carlos. “Even though she was going through her treatment, she was always supporting her friends and she was just optimistic and very strong about it."
Now, her classmates at Killarney Secondary School have kicked off a campaign to raise donations to help Rose’s family.
So far, they have collected $12,000, far exceeding the $5,000 they were originally hoping for. Rose's funeral is scheduled for Saturday.
Kayla Heithton is a student at Killarney helping to raise money to help Rose's family.
“Basically the reason we're doing this is to help her grandma with the costs,” she told CBC News. "She's a part of our grad class and she's just a part of us like a family and we want her to be remembered."
