We may be living longer around the world, but according to a new report, most people are getting sicker.

According to the Global Burden of Disease 2010 study, an intensive look at the life expectancies and prominent diseases around the world, some countries showed progress with citizens living longer, while others lagged behind, according to The Guardian. The massive study has taken about five years to complete and involved 486 authors in 50 countries.

The report found that infectious diseases, maternal and child illness, and malnutrition were decreasing worldwide for younger children (at a rate of 60 per cent), but more and more young and middle-aged adults were dying and suffering from disease and injuries.

"Non-communicable diseases, such as cancer and heart disease, become the dominant causes of death and disability worldwide," according to the Lancet.

Life expectancy also saw a boost for most countries. Both men and women were living longer globally and on average, the life expectancy at birth for women increased to 73.3 years in 2010 from 62.2 in 1970, while for men, the number jumped from 56.4 years to 67.5 years in the same time frame, according to The Guardian.

"Since 1970, men and women worldwide have gained slightly more than ten years of life expectancy overall, but they spend more years living with injury and illness," according to the report.

In Canada, men saw an increase of life expectancy from the age of 74 in 1990 to 78 in 2010, while women slightly moved up from 80 to 82 in the same time period. Other surprising numbers included Russia, where the life expectancy for men was unchanged from 1990 to 2010 at the age of 63, and in Haiti, where the life expectancy for men dropped from 53 in 1990 to 32 in 2010, according to the report.

There are several factors that can shape a person's life expectancy, including standards of living and health care. According to a recent report by the Economist Intelligence Unit, an independent company with The Economist Group, the world's best places to be born in 2013 were the countries with some of the highest life expectancy rates at birth, including Australia, Norway, Sweden and Denmark.
