Two more city councillors quit their parties

Two more Montreal councillors quit their municipal parties this morning, meaning that independent councillors now hold the majority of the seats at city hall.

Harout Chitilian, city hall speaker, announced he would quit the Union Montréal party this morning. He explained that, as speaker, he wants to be perceived as completely neutral by all parties.

Today, the mayor of Villeray-Saint-Michel-Parc-Extension, Anie Samson, also announced that she will quit Vison Montréal. Samson has sat with the party since 1994.

City council is now composed of 20 independent, 19 Union Montreal, 14 Vision Montreal and 10 Projet Montreal councillors.

Chitilian said the changes will not have any major effect on the way council conducts business.
