EDMONTON - Municipal debt continued to steadily increase across Alberta last year, as cities and towns cope with growing demands and a growing population.
Municipalities collectively owed $7.7 billion in 2011, according their audited financial statements now available online through Alberta Municipal Affairs. That’s up from $7.2 billion in 2010, and has more than tripled since it was $2.5 billion in 2004, the earliest years for which numbers were available.
