GRANDE PRAIRIE, Alta. - A snowmobile rider has been killed in northwestern Alberta.

RCMP say the accident happened southwest of Grande Prairie near the B.C. boundary in an area known as the Kakwa Ski-Doo Staging Area.

Investigators say two snowmobilers were out grooming a trail and were returning to camp when one of the riders lost control of his machine and was seriously injured.

The second rider managed to get the injured man to a heated shelter and then set off to get help, but it came too late.

Police are not releasing the dead man's name, but say he was 45 and from the Grande Prairie area.

They do not believe alcohol was a factor in the accident.
