Cypress Mountain Snowboarder Rescued From Out Of Bounds Area

Another Risky Snowboarder Rescue

For the second time in a week, B.C. search crews had to rescue a stranded snowboarder who went out of bounds near Cypress Mountain.

West Vancouver Police say two snowboarders who had left the designated area on Cypress Mountain became separated. The man who made it back safety called police, sending the North Shore Rescue team out to the Montizambert Creek area off the ski hill. They used GPS and cellphone to figure out where the stranded 30-year-old snowboarder was located and reached him at about 10 p.m.

On Tuesday night, the team rescued Sebastien Boucher, 33, from a deep gully. He had snowboarded out of bounds and triggered a dangerous three-day search.

Team leader Tim Jones told CNKW on Saturday that such situations are frustrating for searchers who have to risk their lives in avalanche-prone territory.

"It's Russian roulette right now. Your luck is going to run out," said Jones.

Search crews had to leave thousands of dollars in gear behind because of the risky rescue, reported CTV News.

Boucher, who suffered minor frostbite on his feet, was given a $10,000 fine by private company that operates the Cypress Mountain ski area. Company spokesman Joffrey Koeman said Boucher ignored a series of posted warning signs and bypassed a boundary rope, reported CBC News.
