Members of a Calgary family had a shocking and violent awakening on Boxing Day when a man broke into their home and started attacking them.

In a call from the northwest community of Parkdale just before 5 a.m. MT on Wednesday, police were told about a man walking in the 400 block of 26th Street who wasn't wearing any shoes and was tearing off his clothes.

By the time officers arrived, the man had smashed part of the front door at a nearby house. He crawled inside the home and began attacking some of the residents.

The five people in the home, ranging in age from early 20s to over 80, weren't seriously hurt, but it took four officers to subdue the suspect.

A victims’ assistance support team was called in to help the family.

Police say the man who broke into the home is facing charges ranging from property damage to assault.
