Meanwhile, Australian Aborigines are in solidarity with Idle No More, but they themselves appear to be in very dire straits right now. Another forced relocation program is in the pipeline, and their traditional lands will be handed over to mining interests. International solidarity is being sought, but there hasn't been any media coverage outside Australia. An independent documentary called "Our Generation" can be watched for free until January 10 (in honor of Human Rights Day). Google (or Bing) "Our Generation." -- Thank you from an Idol No More participant in Los Angeles.

Unfortunately, many people who contribute to HP do not seem to realize that Idle No More and Chief Spence’s hunger strike are not the same thing, although they both stem from the same concern for the way Harper is ruining this country. I am happy that both are getting worldwide attention and that INM, in particular, is gaining legs in every continent except Antarctica. A benchmark for news coverage is Aljazeera and, so far, they don’t appear to have picked up on this important story. When they do, INM will have hit the big time.

its about extortion and ensuring that your entitlements continue until the end of time

funny how attawakpskat could afford a heated indoor rink with zamboni and stock market investments but no housing..or how there were 6 brand new homes on the reserve that were not completed because they didnt bother to complete the paperwork

try searching for the audit results, they are public now - starting to look a little arrogant on your side - people are waking up to the enormous scam Spence has perpetuated

Canadian Progressives are NOT onboard with this.

and apparently alot of the money goes to Israel.

I don't think it is a coincidence that Canada's Minister of Enivornment Peter Kent and Minister of Natural Resources Joe Oliver are big, big pro-Israel supporters.
01:31 PM on 01/08/2013
DeBeers has been giving 10 million a year to Attawaskipat, plus giving a large number of jobs.

Oh thats right - they dont want jobs! They want handouts!

This coming from a former NDP/Liberal supporter. In Canada, we can see extortion for what it is. 100 million in 5 years to a reserve with less than 1700 people and 81% of the transactions have no supporting documentation whatsoever. 60% dont even have a reason for the payments, courtesy of the recent Deloitte and Touch audit.

HP apparently don't realize they are 'getting behind' a fraud. A hunder strike does not include fish broth - its called a liquid diet.

tell me..does money really mean so much? or knit picking about the definition of a "hunger strike"? i feel there is a lot more to resolving treaties than meets the eye...it has to be dealt with and soon...ON A PERSONAL LEVEL, I RESENT YET ANOTHER MULTINATIONAL CORP RAPING OUR COUNTRY FOR HUGE PROFIT.

I would be interested in seeing a real accounting of what canadians are spending every year supporting native peoples.
Per capita
And then the equivalent spent on non native peoples.
Per capita.
Just so everybody knows and has a clear understanding of the issue.
Cause thats the real issue isn't it?
They feel we as canadians are not doing enough to support them and their communities
If it turns out native people are getting diddly squat compared to non native people then we should do something about it.
If it turns out native people are getting a disproportional amount of support than non native people then something will need to be done about that as well(considering the obviously poor value for dollar spent)
Money is the issue and we need an honest assesment of how these funds are being allocated.
If we want fairness as a cornerstone of canadian society.
And I make this point anticipating a systemic blowback against native peoples in the not to distant future.
Just to be clear.
02:13 PM on 12/28/2012
The $ sign is definitely the "bottom line" value of the dominant Euro-white society. While at first glance Warren Yuill's solution seems sound, the relationship is far more complicated. First Nations have built-in bias towards relationship and keeping promises. The treaties are promises, or in Christian/Jewish languages, covenants. For a "divorce" to occur, both parties need to be at the table. First Nations are looking for healthy relationship, promises kept, not a divorce. After all, since all the land and resources belonged to them, if they move out of the "house, " there is no other land they can take in order to function in their pre-covenant state, with complete sovereignty, as they had before Europeans (who couldn't resolve their issues in Europe) decided they needed this land and resources. And by the way, the pot of money "Canadians are spending" included tax dollars paid by Natives. As Wab Kinew's noted, he even paid a land transfer tax. Money is the issue, only if you have not heard/listened to the First Nations' perspective.

I agree with everything Wed-ndy said. You've just simplified the argument to what we white's believe it is. But it's more than that Warren, a lot more than that. Seeing as you have such insight, why don't you explain to us what was discussed between aboriginals and bureaucrats in detail at ANY treaty meeting in the past 200 years. You can't, I know, cause only white people are doing the writing. Good Faith has never been practiced on our side and your comment exposes the ignorant simplification of a very complex problem that not only money will solve. Your idea of equality is a little late!

It is the social media sites that allowed this movement to spread rapidly. Facebook, twitter, instagram, blogs, etc. provide an avenue for the voiceless to be heard.
