A 21-year-old Delta man with an extensive criminal record has been arrested following a police chase that ended when a stolen van crashed into a home in New Westminster, B.C.

The chase began after Delta police reported someone had broken into a Delta home and stolen the homeowner's Chevrolet van Thursday evening.

An RCMP officer in Surrey soon spotted the van and pulled it over on Scott Road, near 103A Avenue.

But as police approached the vehicle, the suspect put the van into reverse and crashed into the police cruiser, and then speed off.

RCMP caught up with the van on the Pattullo Bridge, but were unable to pull it over and called off the chase.

Surrey RCMP notified the New Westminster Police Department on the other side of the bridge. New Westminster police found the van after it crashed into the garage of a home on Richmond Street.

Police said the suspect had fled the scene.

A police dog tracked down the suspect, and officers arrested him. The suspect is expected to face a number of charges, but none have yet been laid and his identity has not been released.

Investigators did say the suspect has an extensive criminal record, and was wanted on an outstanding warrant for breaching his parole.
