Posted: Updated:

The Lower Mainland’s first baby of 2013 was born in Langley just before 12:30 a.m. New Year’s Day.

Baby Shane Greenwood weighed nine pounds, five ounces.

“I didn't even think of that at all,” said mom Alyssa Burkhardt. “I thought I was going to have a Christmas baby.”

Shane was one of five babies born at Langley Memorial Hospital on New Year's Day.

He also shares his birthday with his grandmother, Kelly Greenwood, who was the first New Year’s baby in Surrey 44 years ago.

“You don't meet too many people with the same birthday and you have your grandson born on your birthday,” she said.

“Last night I was waiting, waiting, and finally 12:30 a.m., the phone rings … pretty exciting.”

B.C.’s first baby of 2013 was born in Kamloops. David Junior Ricky Joe James was born at 12:02 a.m. at Royal Inland Hospital.
