Idle No More On HuffPost Live

WATCH: Idle No More On HuffPost Live

Idle No More was sparked by the Conservative government's Bill C-45 legislation that makes it easier to lease reserve land, but the movement includes deeper concerns such as living conditions on aboriginal reserves and treaty rights.

HuffPost Live host Jacob Soboroff spoke to HuffPost B.C.'s associate news editor Jesse Ferreras and Winnipeg-based activist/HuffPost Canada blogger Wab Kinew about Idle No More and where it's heading.

Ferreras talked about the movement's origins around the time of the Occupy movement, saying it took a little longer for a spark to get this one going.

He said Idle No More was sparked by the conservative government's Bill C-45 legislation that makes it easier to lease reserve land, but that the movement has deeper concerns with the federal government.

Kinew explained how the movement has crossed borders, with expressions of international support in New Zealand, Africa and Europe.

"There's been a growing pan-indigenous connection between native Americans, aboriginal people in Canada, aboriginal people in Australia," he said.

"Now that we live in an era where technology makes that connectivity so much easier, we're starting to see that relationship evolve into these events which are in fact showings of solidarity."
