Icy road conditions were blamed for three separate crashes that claimed four lives on Northern Alberta highways over the weekend.
The three crashes occurred within a one-hour period on Sunday, Global Edmonton reported.
On Sunday, a 53-year-old man died when a pickup truck and a car collided on Highway 63 near House River, on a highway that was also the scene of another fatality just last week.
Two people also died in a crash at about the same time near Villeneuve, just outside Edmonton. A minivan and SUV collided on highway 44 and the driver of the van and a passenger in the SUV were killed, Global Edmonton reported. Two other people were also inside the SUV and were taken to hospital, Global Edmonton added, while the driver was the lone occupant of the minivan.
And another death occurred on Highway 881 new Conklin late Sunday. Crews cleared away a number of vehicles, including a semi-trailer, after a 44-year-old man died in the crash, while the 61-year-old driver of the semi-trailer suffered minor injuries, CTV Edmonton reported.
Two major highways to Fort McMurray, and three provincial highways in total were closed, as RCMP warned motorists to stay off Northern Alberta highways because of poor road conditions, the Calgary Herald reported.
