According to the Calgary Herald, the southbound accident took place shortly before 6 a.m., near 24th Street S.E.

Sixteen people in total were involved in the accident, said the Calgary fire department, and one person was extricated from badly damaged vehicles while others kept warm in a Calgary Transit bus.

"Nine of those patients were transported in stable, non-life threatening condition with minor injuries," said EMS spokesman Adam Loria.

Six people were uninjured.

According to the city, two lanes of southbound Deerfoot Trail remain open.

Calgary emergency crews have been busy over the past two days, responding to dozens of traffic accidents after a heavy snowfall that began Wednesday night covered the city and left roads slippery and treacherous.

Battalion Chief Larry Fisher told CTV fire crews have had to attend more than 20 crashes so far today and he only expects that number to increase as the day goes on.
