Driver distracted by iPod hit pedestrian, police say

A 70-year-old pedestrian is in hospital with a broken leg, broken ribs and lacerations to his head after allegedly being hit by a 19-year-old driver who was distracted by her iPod.

North Vancouver RCMP say the driver swerved and hit the man as he walked on the sidewalk on Mount Seymour Parkway on Thursday.

“It’s uncertain at this point exactly what she was doing,” said RCMP Cpl. Richard De Jong.

“We're thinking that she was changing music, the selection, perhaps the volume, and obviously just enough time to distract her from the road and cause her to swerve off the road and hit the pedestrian on the sidewalk."

The woman, whose name has not been released, has been charged with driving without due care and attention and driving while using an electronic device.
