The Calgary Flames host San Jose in their season debut, which goes Jan. 20, the first day of the condensed 2013 season.

A total of 13 games are set for Day 1 of the regular season that ends April 27.

Unlike Edmonton, the Calgary Flames are in the pits and they don't have much hope to lean on. The Flames will kick off the shortened 2013 NHL season on Sunday Jan. 20 on home ice against the San Jose Sharks.

The Flames made a late playoff push in 2012 instead of bottoming out for a high draft pick. They reacquired Mike Cammalleri from the Montreal Canadiens with the hope of squeaking into the first round.

Alas, they failed, and in so doing they fell just out of the range that would have permitted them a high first-round pick. Top prospect Tim Erixon also refused to sign an entry-level deal with the team, forcing the Flames to deal him to the Rangers.

The Flames may have some hope in KHL signing Roman Cervenka, who was the Russian league's top scorer in the 2010-11 season. But his production has dropped since then, so it leaves one to question when the Flames will find themselves on the upswing again.
