UPDATE: - Jan. 15, 2013 - Kyle Scott Martin has been charged in relation to Friday's robbery which lead to the stabbing of police service dog, Teak. Martin is due to appear in court on Jan. 16.

A Vancouver police dog is recovering after being stabbed by a robbery suspect.

A man tried to rob an Esso gas station at Fraser Street and Marine Drive just before 7:30 p.m. on Friday, said a police news release. The suspect was scared off by a staff member and ran away.

A police K-9 unit tracked the man to the area of East 52nd Avenue and Fraser Street. As officers tried to arrest him, he slashed the police dog with a knife, said the statement from Sgt. Randy Fincham.

The police dog, identified by Vancouver police as a German Shepherd named Teak, was rushed to an emergency animal clinic.

A 20-year-old Vancouver man was arrested and will likely face charges for robbery, weapons offences and assaulting the police dog, said Fincham.
