The punk pioneer fused rock and poetry into a potent musical mix in New York in the late '70s with songs like Because the Night and took part in the rise of punk at the CBGB nightclub.
She continues to make music — the latest recording is 2012’s Banga. Smith won Sweden's Polar Music Prize in 2011.
She has been making drawings and taking photographs since the late 1960s when she had a romance with photographer Robert Mapplethorpe. Her memoir of those years, Just Kids, earned a National Book Award.
Recently she has added installation to her art practice and has had shows in Paris and Spain, as well as a 300-work retrospective organized by The Andy Warhol Museum in 2002.
Patti Smith: Camera Solo opens at the AGO on Feb. 9, 2013 and features 70 of her photographs.
