LETHBRIDGE, Alta. - A police officer from southern Alberta has been charged with fraud and mischief.

Lethbridge police say the charges stem from an insurance claim the officer made on his truck.

It's alleged the officer falsely reported his truck had been broken into while he was snowmobiling in British Columbia.

Police say the officer was then paid out for items he claimed he lost.

Trever James Sparrow is charged with one count of fraud under $5,000 and two counts of public mischief.

The 37-year-old is on paid leave pending a disciplinary hearing.

He has been with the Lethbridge force for eight years.
