WILLIAMS LAKE, B.C. - An RCMP officer accused of beating a 17-year-old girl in the back of a police cruiser is on trial in Williams Lake, B.C.

Const. Andy Yung is charged with assault in connection with the attack on Sept. 10, 2011 after police were called to deal with a teen who was reportedly drunk.

The Abbotsford Police Department conducted an independent investigation after the girl suffered facial injuries.

A charge of assaulting a police officer was recommended against her but later withdrawn.

The BC Civil Liberties Association claims the teen was running from a gang when she was arrested and punched in the face by a Mountie.

The association says it has raised concerns about similar incidents involving use of force by Mounties against First Nations people in the northwestern part of B.C.
