Police seek info on homicide victim's final days

Toronto police are asking for the public's help in piecing together the final days of a 65-year-old man who was found killed inside his Melville Avenue apartment on Saturday night.

Jose Ignacio Ortiz, 65, was found dead in his apartment near Dupont and Christie streets after firefighters went in search of a reported natural gas leak.

Ortiz's body was found inside his apartment and a post-mortem determined the cause of death was blunt-force trauma, said Det.-Sgt. Pauline Gray, the case's lead investigator.

Ortiz was unemployed, originally from Ecuador, and addicted to drugs and alcohol, Gray said. He had contact with police, but it was more than 20 years ago.

Gray said she is "not convinced" the gas leak had anything to do with his death.

Police are asking anyone with information about Ortiz's whereabouts on Friday, Jan. 18, and Saturday, Jan. 19, to call police at 416-808-1400 or Crime Stoppers at 416-222-8477.
