If you haven't heard of Emily Weiss, the chief blogger and beauty aficionado over at Into The Gloss, then you're missing out.
Tuesday, the ever-so-lovely Weiss popped by Holt Renfrew to take part in their Powder Puff Beauty Party and to chat about all things "getting beautiful." She divulged some of her favourite insider tips on buying products on a budget (without skimping on quality) and offered some pretty great look good tips and tricks.
"One thing I think is totally worth the splurge is investing in a really great moisturizer that's both day and night," she says (recommending La Mer's moisturizing soft cream as her go-to brand). "There are actually a lot [of ingredients] in there so it's a bang for your buck. If you're going to splurge on something like that then you can buy some other things from the drugstore."
And what of her beauty tips? For starters, you should consistently use makeup to contour your face.
"Gone are the days of using a foundation all over your face and making it all one colour. I think everything should be about creating highlights and lowlights on your face. That's what gives your face dimension and makes it look alive and expressive. So, for example, put a darker colour [of blush] under the cheekbones to give them definition."
Emily adds that taking care of your skin and having fun with makeup products is integral to looking your best.
"Beauty is important as a way of expressing yourself. It's just like what you choose to wear in the morning," says Weiss. "I think it's important not because you have to do it, but because it's an opportunity to play, an opportunity to try a new look every day — like the way you'd part your hair differently or wear a new lip colour. That's what makes playing with beauty products really fun."

Use Lipstick As Blush
Lipstick is very cost-effective because it works double duty on your lips and cheeks. Emily sometimes dabs her lipstick on her cheeks. She says it's the safest way to ensure your makeup matches because both your lipstick and the flush on your cheeks remain in the same colour family.
For Emily, moisturizing is one of the biggest parts of her beauty routine. "Because I'm into dewy skin rather than a matte look, I like to use a lot of moisturizer in the morning whether or not I'm going to add foundation or makeup later. I still like to create this fresh canvas and I think that comes from having a great moisturizer and letting it soak into your skin," says Emily.
Garnier Anti-Wrinkle Eye Roller
One of the most recommended products Emily Weiss has heard of? This compact eye roller.
Emily told us that she once heard someone say the face should be contoured like a face you'd see in a black and white movie. Highlight the places on your face that would naturally catch light like your cheekbones, the bridge of your nose, forehead and cupid's bow. Add shadows to the natural contours of your face like the hollow just below your cheekbones.
Cetaphil Daily Facial Cleanser
Emily recommends Cetaphil as an alternative to pricier facial cleansers. Why? Because cleansers are used to clean the face — the product isn't staying on your skin for an extended period of time.
Neutrogena Oil-Free Acne Wash
Can't use Cetaphil? There are a variety of other cleansers available at the drugstore that cater to all skin types, from acne-prone (Neutrogena is a great brand in this area) to sensitive. More brands are producing eco-friendly products for people who prefer using organic ingredients in their skin-care routine.
Lancôme Hypnose Mascara
"Mascaras are one of those things you use a lot of. I love Lancôme," says Emily.
L'Oreal Paris Voluminous Mascara
A favourite drugstore beauty buy: L'Oreal Paris Voluminous Mascara.
Don't Splurge On Cotton Pads
Believe it or not, cotton pads can be very expensive. Emily recommends you purchase them from the drugstore rather than at a high-end beauty boutique.
Instead of fancy, expensive body moisturizer, you can get wonderful results using drugstore brand moisturizers like Lubriderm, says Emily.
Aveeno Moisturizing Lotion
L'Oreal Infallible Eyeshadow
Emily told us that L'Oreal Infallible eye shadows are one of her favourite products. "Those are really awesome, like really amazing. It's the coolest night time look," she said.
L'Oreal Paris Revitalift
Emily told us that brands like L'Oreal Paris and Olay have access to such great technology.
Olay Total Effects Anti-Aging Night Firming Treatment
She adds Olay's age renewal products work very well.
Brush Your Brows
A defined brow can give your face an instant lift. "A groomed brow frames your whole face," said Emily. You can use a dry mascara wand or a toothbrush to keep your brows in check.
