Three people in Edmonton have been charged for allegedly exploiting foreign workers.
RCMP say two individuals came to Canada from Israel to work at a local coffee shop in Edmonton and were allegedly told upon arrival that the pre-arranged employment was no longer available.
They were told that they would work at a Marble Slab Creamery store instead for less money, RCMP claim.
The two males were allegedly further threatened with deportation if they complained to government officials that their terms of employment were different then from what had been agreed upon.
The workers were eventually fired.
Yassin Hamdom, Wendy Sawa and Ahmed Baalbaki face numerous charges including unauthorized employment of a foreign national and misrepresentation.
“This is another example of exploited innocent people who want to make a life for themselves and come to work to Canada from abroad,” said S/Sgt. Gamlin of Northwest Region Immigration and Passport.
“Human Trafficking is a global problem that requires both domestic and international solutions."
The three individuals are set to appear in court in February.
