Family Day in Alberta this year falls on February 18, 2013, and after what seems like a long winter and a big gap of time since the Christmas holidays, you can bet many Albertans will be looking to get out of the house and enjoy some time with loved ones.

We were the first province to adopt Family Day in Canada (the next province to offer a long weekend in February was Saskatchewan, who didn't get around to it until 2007), and have been celebrating since 1990, so we know how to make the holiday count.

THE ROYAL TYRRELL MUSEUM

For the budding archaeologist or dinosaur lover, the Royal Tyrrell Museum in Drumheller has a host of activities over the Family Day weekend, including fossil casting, free auditorium shows and story readings as well as craft time.

TELUS SPARK IN CALGARY

The Telus Spark science center in Calgary is featuring their "How To Make A Monster" special event on Feb. 16 and 17, where fans of animatronics can participate in a hands-on demonstration.

SKIING AND FUN IN THE SNOW

Ski hills around Alberta have a variety of events for the whole family, including the 2nd Annual Rabbit Hill Winter Family Festival on Feb. 16, The Downhill Fun Race at Hidden Valley Feb. 17, Jin in the Park at Castle Mountain on Feb. 17 and Cardboard Toboggan Event at Gwynne Valley in Wetaskiwin on Feb. 17.

FRANK SLIDE INTERPRETIVE CENTRE

Admission is free to everyone at the Frank Slide Interpretive Centre on Feb. 18. Two award-winning audio visual presentations, “In the Mountain’s Shadow” and “On the Edge of Destruction” will play throughout the day.

WATERTON WINTERFEST

Strap on your snowshoes or cross-country skis and head to Waterton WinterFest on Feb. 16 and 17 for a day of winter fun. Have some hot chocolate around the fire, ride in a horse-drawn carriage or go for a swim at Waterton Lakes Lodge.

EDMONTON'S RUTHERFORD HOUSE

Step back in time with a visit to Edmonton's historic Rutherford House -- home to the first Premier of Alberta, Alexander Cameron Rutherford. Explore the home, have some cookies baked in the wood-burning stove and make a craft.

FORT CALGARY

Admission is free to Fort Calgary's Winter Carnival on Feb. 18, where your family can play carnival games, do crafts, enjoy face painting and maple-syrup candy making.

OILSANDS DISCOVERY CENTRE

Families in Fort McMurray can head to the Oilsands Discovery Centre where admission is free on Family Day. Exhibits, hand-on experiments and crafts are available for aspiring riggers of all ages.

HERITAGE PARK

Gasoline Alley at Heritage Park in Calgary is celebrating Family Day from Feb. 14 to 18, with a Family Quest, where participants complete five hands-on challenges to determine whether their family has a generation gap. Activities include creating your own radio play, auto golf, family games challenge and a chance to sit in an Austin Nippy.

FAMILY DAY CLASSIC

Lace up your skates, grab your sticks and head over to Edmonton's Family Day Classic hockey tournament from Feb. 15-18. Teams can register online to participate in a variety of age categories. The event is about giving back and promoting awareness for the Stollery Children's Hospital and Edmonton Hockey.

WINEFEST EDMONTON

For those without kids, or those who want a break from them, Winefest Edmonton runs Feb. 15 and 16. Wine experts are on hand as visitors drink their way from booth to booth. You'll be slurring "I love you" to family and strangers alike before you know it.
