Travellers who frequent Asia from Canada now have more options when it comes to flying.
Porter Airlines, the Toronto-Island-based carrier, announced on Monday that passengers flying out to Billy Bishop Airport can now head to Singapore's Changi Airport. The flight isn't direct but focuses instead on a partnership allowing customers to transfer airlines using one ticket. Flying takes an estimated 20 hours and requires a connection at Newark Liberty International Airport in New Jersey.
The agreement is effective immediately with one connecting flight operating each way. However, those flying to Singapore with face a one-hour layover in New Jersey, while those bound for Toronto can expect an hour-and-half layover.
"This important new agreement gives Canadians a broad slate of new options for discovering the best of Southeast Asia via SIA's strong network in the region," said C.W. Foo, regional vice president - Americas for Singapore Airlines. "Porter Airlines has quickly become a passenger favourite in Canada, and we look forward to providing travellers a more seamless flying experience for both business and leisure." Last week, Porter Airlines was selected asone of two carriers in North America to earn 4 stars in SkyTrax's annual airline ranking.
The partnership is the latest of three interline agreements Porter has struck with other airlines. Last September, Porter signed an agreement with South African Airways, allowing passengers flying from Toronto to South Africa with a connection in Washington, reports the Financial Post. Earlier in 2012, Porter struck another deal with Qatar Airways giving passengers the chance to fly to the Middle Eastern country, according to the Globe and Mail.
Porter says the flight from Newark to Singapore will offer an all-business class configuration of 100 seats, giving passengers a chance to get comfy. And there's probably a good reason why: the route between Newark and Singapore is the world's longest non-stop flight, clocking in at 18 hours 30 minutes.
