UPDATE: - Feb. 2, 2013 - The province's coroner has identified the victim as Ryan Allen Walter Jacob, 41, of Vancouver.

BURNABY — One man is dead after a police-involved shooting early this morning in Burnaby, the Independent Investigation Office has confirmed.

IIO spokesman Owen Court says officers responded to a 911 call about a man with a knife in the early morning hours in the 4100-block of Albert Street.

According to Court, an RCMP officer claims he saw a man that matched the description provided by the 911 caller at Hastings Street and MacDonald Avenue.

The man, whose name has not been released, was shot and transported to hospital where he later died.

Neighbours report hearing two or three shots after police were confronted by a man with a knife.

The Independent Investigations Office, which probes police incidents involving death or serious harm, has sent seven members to the scene.

There's no word what may have prompted the altercation.

A section of Hastings Street is closed to traffic this morning. TransLink says Hastings is shut between Gilmore and Ingleton Avenues and buses are being rerouted.
