The Pittsburgh Penguins have claimed former Canadian junior standout Zach Boychuk off waivers.

Boychuk, 23, has been unable to gain a foothold with the Carolina Hurricanes over four pro seasons.

The centre has recorded 16 goals and 16 assists in 37 games for Charlotte in the American Hockey League this season. Over 73 career NHL games, he has seven goals and 11 assists, with six penalty minutes.

The five-foot-nine forward played for the Lethbridge Hurricanes and twice won gold as a member of Canada's world junior team (2008, 2009).

The Hurricanes selected him 14th overall in the 2008 NHL draft.
