Attawapiskat Protesters Block Ice Road Leading To De Beers Diamond Mine

De Beers Canada says a group of Attawapiskat residents is blockading the main winter road leading to the company's Victor diamond mine in northern Ontario.

De Beers says the blockade began Monday evening on a road the company uses to move in supplies like fuel, machine parts and equipment that would be too heavy to fly in.

Spokesman Tom Ormsby says the blockade has not yet impacted the mine's operations, but has forced De Beers to cease operations on the road.

The mine -- 90 kilometres west of Attawapiskat -- has a large aboriginal workforce, but First Nation has complained that its share of the bounty from the mine isn't getting back to the community.

A federal review of the relationship between the Victor mine and Attawapiskat showed that government support for training and capacity did not start soon enough to deal with the huge lack of skills in the First Nation.

Ormsby says De Beers has an annual resupply program to deliver non-perishable items such as oil and new equipment to the mine over the ice road.

"Our program is usually about 30 days in duration, while the road itself is usually open several weeks longer than our needs," Ormsby said Tuesday in an email.

"Supplying the mine is a year-round exercise by air, but we save the bulk of the program for the winter road because it is the most cost-effective way to deliver these larger and predictable items," he said.

A representative of the Attawapiskat community could not be reached for comment.

The problem is with the psychotic criminals who are infecting Canada's government. The Harper criminal and his band of criminal "minister" thugs are threatening not only Canada and its environment, but the entire earth. Harper is a warmongering, human rights crushing, world environmental destroying monster who should be behind bars for the rest of his life, not let loose in society, or a public position, to destroy our world and its future.

"Attawapiskat diamond mine blockade continues, protesters eye De Beers airport

The people who are blocking have a lot of concerns,” said Spence, who is currently on sick leave and recovering from her six week-long protest fast.

Spence said during Tuesday’s meeting one community member discussed giving De Beers 48 hours to vacate the mine before facing a blockade at its airport. The mining company flies out its diamonds via charters with schedules known only to a few key people.

. . . he said their list of concerns include what they believe to be discrimination and racism at the mine, lack of employment opportunities and training programs, compensation for lost traplines and a clause in the impact benefit agreement between De Beers and Attawapiskat that absolves the company from having to fork over compensation for “unpredictable impacts” the mine could have on the environment."

Gives us cash $$$$ or vacate the mine. Chief X spence has her eye on diamonds. Or perhaps a new escalade?

Um, if they are blocking the road, do they not have a message? What is with the reporting here?
" but First Nation has complained that its share of the bounty from the mine isn't getting back to the community." Is this the official position or is this a past complaint?

It's 10 people who perceive that DeBeers is not sharing the wealth in an equitable way. The agreement Attawapiskat First Nations have with DeBeers is a written legal contract and outlines provisions for dispute resolution. So if it was an official position of the band then they'd either go to arbitration or court I presume.

The comments on both sides are much more interesting than the story. Look, read between the lines. The residents there aren't as stupid as you think. The mine has used the road for what it needs to use it for and now the residents are blockading it. No one will lose their job or a paycheck.

If it wasn't for the mine there would be no reason for anyone to be there. Do you think you can buy anything with a pelt these days? How many Char to a flatscreen? It isn't a problem of FN rights not being respected. It is a problem that natives want the same rights as everyone else and society wants them treated the same.

Unfortunately that all means getting with the program not being a program. Hundreds of thousands of people with FN ancestry have already done so and are doing quite well. No one likes to talk about that because the contrast throws the racist overtones out the window. Then we're just down to the Idle part of the phrase, and to even mention that is not PC.

You can purchase a 32 inch LED for three marten pelts, depending on the quality of the marten pelts. Arctic char wholesale price is $6.75 to $8.85 a pound.

The problems in Attawapiskat are largely the result of their geographic isolation. Racism, both internal and external plays a tiny part, but it's also generational poverty and geographic isolation. Most remote white communities have several billions of dollars worth of highways connecting them to the rest of the world or rail lines at the very least which in turn makes the transportation of goods more affordable. Nobody's complaining that there are 220km of highway being supported by provincial taxpayers in the GTA solely to connect Chapleau to Thessalon and Sault Ste. Marie. It's not strictly speaking, just about the price, it's a bit about racial prejudice or preconceived notions about easy living or lazy aboriginals.

Yah, the hundreds of millions coming from us, the taxpayers, aren't getting back to the community either. Maybe they need to ask thief Spence and her boyfriend.

We all think it is greed and desire for more money. Maybe we should turn the clock back and see where this all began. Who helped cause the sewage backup in attawipiskat that caused the housing crisis we see today? Who is holding back monies owed to the band that was agreed upon in a contract? Who is really to blame for the troubles they face today and continue to cause headaches for those on the reserve? Read for yourself and then determine why they have set up the road block.

If you're saying that DeBeers is responsible for the sewage backup and thus liable for the damages then why block a road? If someone from McDonalds scratched your car would you stage a sit-in or simply take them to court? The article doesn't actually address why those 10 people set up a road block, so you're simply speculating. They may be unaware of the deal they made with DeBeers, I imagine most people are. They may simply perceive that their poverty is due to other people's wealth - some people do think that way.
