Prince George, B.C., is working to overcome its reputation as the country's crime capital.
The city has been named Canada's most dangerous city by Maclean's Magazine three years in a row. Now, the city is working a new crime prevention program aimed children aged three to 16.
"So it looks at the real, root causes of crime, and tries to act on those root causes very early on in the game before they materialize into those problem behaviours that are likely to lead to criminal involvement,” said city spokesperson Chris Bone.
Catherine Kendell runs a drop-in centre in the city's highest crime neighborhood.
"Money well spent could be that a neighborhood centre be built where the services could be provided to the community members where they need it, in the way that they need it,” she said.
The city is applying to the Department of Public Safety's Crime Prevention Centre for funding, where up to $7.5 million is available over the next five years.
The details of the plan still need to be worked out but the city hopes it will eventually become part of a broader crime reduction strategy.
