CALGARY -- The mother of a Calgary woman killed nearly 12 years ago is hoping for closure now that the trial for her alleged murderer has begun.

Barry David Brown is charged with first-degree murder in the death of 37-year-old Corinne Belanger in her home in 2001.

Corinne's mother Lilly Belanger, says it's been a long time coming, but it means she is not forgotten.

Brown was friends with Corrine Belanger's ex-husband, and the Crown alleges he killed her to help his friend, who was fighting with Belanger for custody of their child.

Court heard Monday that Belanger was shot three times in her bedroom, and two of the shots hit her heart.

Police say advances in science and DNA technology led them to arrest Brown in 2010.
