Police have identified the man who died after being assaulted Saturday near the intersection of Commercial Drive and Venables Street in Vancouver.

Sgt. Randy Fincham said 59-year-old Michael Charles Gregory of Vancouver suffered serious injuries in the assault and was declared dead in hospital.

Locals said Gregory was a longtime member and volunteer at the Kettle Friendship Society on Venables Street.

No charges have been laid, but police arrested a 27-year-old man Saturday in connection with the assault.

Fincham said the investigation is ongoing.
