Peter Fassbender, the current mayor of Langley, will be the high-profile candidate for the B.C. Liberals who suffered a setback last week when a star contender was forced to step down.
Fassbender will officially announce his intention to run in Surrey-Fleetwood on Friday morning, but he confirmed his plans to the Langley Times on Thursday.
NDP MLA Jagrup Brar currently represents the riding.
Fassbender, who has been Langley mayor since 2005, said he was encouraged to run provincially by Premier Christy Clark, reported The Globe and Mail.
Fassbender is not running in Langley where he lives because it's held by Transportation Minister Mary Polak, said the newspaper.
Sukh Dhaliwal, a former Liberal MP, dropped out of the race in Surrey-Panorama last week after he revealed he was facing tax evasion charges.
