A one-and-a-half-year old pitbull is recovering at a south Ottawa veterinary hospital after he was shot with a crossbow in west Quebec.

Police in the Outaouais said just before 10 a.m. Thursday, the dog was shot "point blank" behind a home on Périnault Street in Val-des-Monts, Que., north of Gatineau.

The male dog named Jessie James, though wounded, was able to return home and its owners saw the bolt in its chest. Police then arrested a 30-year-old man.

The dog lost of "a lot of blood," according to CBC Ottawa's Alistair Steele, but the veterinarian said it would likely survive after removing the bolt.

The pitbull's owners first brought him to the Gatineau SPCA but he was then sent to Ottawa.

The suspect will likely face several charges, police said.
