SURREY, B.C. - Langley City Mayor Peter Fassbender will run for the B.C. Liberal party in the upcoming provincial election.

The party confirms Fassbender has been acclaimed to run in the Surrey-Fleetwood riding and will be officially nominated on Feb. 24.

The three-term Langley mayor does not live in Surrey, but says he has always fought to ensure communities south of the Fraser River are well represented.

Surrey-Fleetwood is currently held by New Democrat MLA Jagrup Brar, who beat his Liberal challenger by nearly two-thousand votes in the 2009 provincial election.

Fassbender's candidacy comes just days after the Liberals lost a high profile Surrey candidate.

Former Liberal MP Sukh Dhaliwal announced he would give up his nomination in Surrey-Panorama Ridge as he resolves charges under the Income Tax Act.
