Ontario Provincial Police retrieved the body of Smithville, Ont., man Edward Dehaan from the Muskoka River at about 12 p.m. Monday, more than 12 hours after he and three friends fell through the ice.
Three snowmobilers were able to get out of the water, except for Dehaan, and the OPP Under Water Search and Recovery unit was called to help with the search.
Const. Lynda Cranney said the four men were from the Niagara region and unfamiliar with the area.
Police said the four snowmobilers had gone to Deerhurst Resort in Huntsville, Ont., for dinner and were heading back to their cottage near Dorset at about 11 p.m.
On the way, the group stopped for gas in Baysville then took a wrong turn.
The group started driving towards an area of open water, and all four machines went through the ice, police say.
