Double arson suspected in East Vancouver

Fire and police investigators are looking into two suspicious fires, which broke out within metres of each other in East Vancouver early Wednesday morning.

Crews were called to a garage fire in the 2900 block of East 41st Avenue at about 12:45 a.m. PT. They were able to quickly douse the flames, which caused only moderate damage.

Three hours later, firefighters responded to a second fire just across the alley from the first, in an enclosed deck area behind a home in the 5600 block of Rupert Street.

There was extensive damage to the deck and siding of the house, and a neighbouring house was also damaged.

Six people were inside the home at the time, but no one was injured.
