Rapper Wale Confronts Toronto Raptors Play-By-Play Announcer After On-Air Insult During NBA Game

Why Did Rapper Wale Confront Toronto Raptors' Announcers?

Two members of the Toronto Raptors broadcast team got in a strange feud with rapper Wale during this week's NBA game against the Washington Wizards in D.C.

According to Yahoo Sports!, play-by-play man Matt Devlin and color commentator Leo Rautins were calling the Feb 19 game in the third quarter when Raptors player Rudy Gay hit a three-point field goal to make the score 43-39 for the Raptors. Gay made a telephone hand gesture towards somebody in the crowd who was actually 2013 Grammy-nominated rapper Wale.

"And supposedly, this fan is a well-known local rapper. 'Wall-Ay.' Locally, here..." Devlin said before adding "...Wale's inspiring, and I'm sure somebody on Twitter can tell me exactly if they've ever heard of Wale. He's not Drake, that's for sure."

Although Devlin probably didn't think the comment would get back to Wale so quickly, it did. Wale quickly sent a tweet to Devlin with the comment "watch ur mouth." But it didn't end there. Wale soon made his way from his courtside seat up to the area where both Devlin and Rautins were calling the game approximately 20 rows from the floor, making for an interesting situation near the end of the third quarter.

Fans reportedly heard Wale shouting at Devlin, saying "I heard what you said. That's not cool." But Wale told a different story to the Washington Post's D.C. Sports Blog afterwards. "I was just introducing myself, that's all," Wale said. "nah, I wasn't angry. I was like you're not from here, you don't know. You don't know."

Photos and video of the incident however show Wale bending over to confront Devlin as Devlin said they could possibly get to talk to the artist at the end of the quarter as Wale voices his viewpoint.

"toronto RT @rudygay22: Me and @Wale was just joking y'all," Wale retweeted. "Thats my boy right there." Both Gay and Wale know each other so there was no animosity between them. The same probably couldn't be said for Devlin and Wale.

"On the Internet when you defend urself ur criticitzed for being less of a man," Wale tweeted later. "There's NO honor in defending yourself,or your name."

He quickly added: "Somebody call u out your name. And you confront them . YOU wrong . So who u cheerin for the people who take insults in stride? Since when"

Devlin after the game didn't make a big deal of the confrontation. "You know what, we were making fun of ourselves," Devlin said. "Making fun, because we're not hip. Obviously people on Twitter and social media, it kind of took on a life of its own. So he came up, we started talking and there was nothing to it."

Wale was nominated earlier this year for Best Rap Song for "Lotus Flower Bomb" from his 2011 album "Ambition."
