While Canada's big connection to the 2013 Oscars was Best Picture winner "Argo," British Columbians took home two golden statues on Sunday night.
Set decorator Jim Erickson of Salt Spring Island, and his colleague Rick Carter, won the Academy Award for best production design for "Lincoln." They beat teams from "Anna Karenina," "The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey," "Les Miserables" and "Life of Pi."
Erickson, 62, was nominated before in 2008 for best art direction for working on "There Will Be Blood."
After more than three decades in Hollywood, he recently told The Canadian Press that "Lincoln" is his last project, explaining that he wanted to go out on a "high point instead of dribbling out toward the end."
Erickson did not attend Sunday's ceremony due to illness.
Vancouver-based Guillaume Rocheron won an Oscar for best visual effects as part of the team that worked on "Life of Pi." The movie was mostly filmed on a Montreal soundstage.
The fantastic adaptation of Canadian Yann Martel's novel also garnered director Ang Lee an Academy Award.
Rocheron has also worked on the soon-to-be released "Man Of Steel," "Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince" and "Batman Begins."
