HALIFAX - The number of people who visited Nova Scotia in 2012 rose by two per cent when compared with the year before.

The Tourism Department says the province welcomed 1.9 million visitors last year.

Tourism Minister Percy Paris says the numbers are encouraging but the province has work to do.

In 2012, 88 per cent of visitors came from other parts of Canada.

About eight per cent came from the United States and three per cent from overseas.

While the number of tourists from other parts of Canada increased by three per cent, there was a four per cent decrease in visitors from overseas.
