B.C. Mounties busted a Chilliwack medical marijuana grow-op and seized drugs, cash, and a gun, after a report of significant electricity theft.
Nearly 2,000 plants were seized from a rural home on March 5. The property held several licences to grow medical marijuana, but was growing almost 15 times its allowed limit, according to RCMP.
“We have encountered several abuses to the medicinal marijuana system but this one was pretty significant,” said Const. Tracy Wolbeck in a Wednesday news release.
An Abbotsford man, 32, was arrested at the scene.
Several high-profile busts have highlighted the federal government's problems in regulating medical marijuana grow licences.
Last month, the occupant of an Abbotsford home was busted for growing over eight times the number of marijuana plants he was allowed under Health Canada rules for medical marijuana.
A Port Coquitlam home was also shut down last month for violating a medical marijuana licence.
In Maple Ridge, a new draft bylaw was tabled earlier this month to limit commercial medical marijuana crops to agricultural zones in an effort to curtail fire, electrical and security risks in residential areas.
Last year, Health Canada announced the government will no longer grow and distribute medical marijuana, allowing companies that pass strict rules to take over.
