Correctional Service of Canada probes death of central Alberta prison inmate

RED DEER, Alta. - Corrections officials are investigating after a federal prison inmate who was found unresponsive in his cell died in a central Alberta hospital.

Gerrard Mallett was serving time for sexual assault at Bowden Institution.

The Correctional Service of Canada says the 62-year-old man was discovered by guards Saturday and died later in Innisfail hospital.

There was no immediate information on whether he died of natural causes, was a victim of a crime or whether he was alone in his cell. (CKGY)
