In volume terms, wholesale sales were up 0.5 per cent for the month.
The agency says gains were reported in four of seven subsectors, accounting for about two-thirds of wholesale sales.
Sales in the machinery, equipment and supplies subsector rose 3.2 per cent, almost offsetting a drop recorded in December.
The overall increase reflects an eight per cent increase in the sales of computer and communications equipment and supplies.
Sales rose in nine provinces in January, with most of the growth in dollars concentrated in Quebec, where sales were up 2.2 per cent. Ontario was the lone province that posted a decrease, with sales down 0.5 per cent, the fifth decrease since July 2012.
