The 18-year-old mother was last seen at her home in the 7700 block of Kite Street, her family said. Her body was discovered down a steep embankment in Chilliwack on Tuesday.
Leila James said she saw Pernosky and a man in front of Pernosky's home just after 12:30 a.m. Saturday.
"They were sitting outside her front door drinking and smoking," James said. "He was maybe medium build, 5'10, he had a baseball cap on … he was driving a white car."
Police say they have no suspects, but are speaking with several persons of interest.
IHIT Sgt. Jennifer Pound said someone spotted a body down an embankment in the 43400 block of Old Orchard Road in Chilliwack on Tuesday.
Due to the steep terrain, a search and rescue team was called in to retrieve the body, which police identified as Pernosky's.
Pound said based on the evidence it was clear that someone killed her, but an autopsy has to be completed to confirm the cause of her death.
Pernosky was a young mother
Pernosky's friends and family grew extremely concerned after she stopped using social media to communicate with them just after midnight Saturday. Her purse and cellphone were also left in her home.
The regional Integrated Homicide Investigation Team starting working with Mission RCMP on Monday due to the suspicious nature of her disappearance.
Pernosky's death is especially tragic because of her young age, and because she leaves behind a young son, Pound said.
“Rachel was just 18 years old and a mother of a baby when her life was brutally taken from her," she said in a written statement.
"The person [or persons] who murdered her have left a hole in the lives of those who loved her and child who will be without his mom."
Police are asking anyone with information about her disappearance or death to report it.
Family and friends will be holding a candlelight vigil on Thursday night, and a benefit concert on Friday night at the Snipers Pool Hall in Mission.
