One person is dead after a van and a truck collided on Highway 7, 500 metres east of the intersection of Waleach Road and the Lougheed Highway in Agassiz, B.C.

Around 1 p.m. PT on Thursday, a 2013 Dodge minivan was travelling eastbound on the Lougheed Highway when it crossed the center line of the roadway into the path of a semi trailer, police say.

The two vehicles collided head-on and came to a stop in opposite ditches, both fully engulfed in flames.

The driver of the semi trailer, a 59-year-old man from Mission, was taken by ambulance to a local hospital and was treated for minor injuries. The driver of the minivan died of his injuries at the scene.

Police say weather conditions do not appear to have been a factor in the collision.

The highway is closed in both directions between Hope and Agassiz. A detour is available via Highway 1.
