Police arrest Saint-Léonard man after 8-hour-long standoff

Montreal police have arrested a man after he barricaded himself inside a home in Montreal's Saint-Léonard borough for more than eight hours after shooting at police and ambulance technicians overnight Friday.

Paramedics and police were called to the home on De Pontoise Street around 8 p.m. because a 60-year-old man needed medical attention.

Authorities were forced to evacuate a few homes and erect a safety perimeter around the area..

Police spokesman Yannick Ouimet said the man began shooting toward police and ambulance workers when they arrived at the home.

Ouimet said the man then barricaded himself inside for several hours while police tried to negotiate with him.

"He was placed under arrest around 4:25 a.m. and was taken to the detention centre where he should be interviewed by investigators later on [Saturday,]" said Ouimet. "Possible accusations could be laid against this gentleman — we can think immediately about attempted murder."

No one was injured during the standoff and the safety perimeter was lifted.

De Pontoise Street remains closed while police investigate the scene.
