The RCMP said they've been notified about a missing man who was last seen at the Irving gas station in Baddeck on Monday.
The family of 81-year-old Jerry Hengeveld reported him missing on Friday.
He's from Waterville which is several hours away, but his car was seen just hours before the crash.
Witnesses said a light-coloured vehicle drove onto the ferry Monday evening and off an upright ramp, plunging into the water.
So far police have not been able to confirm the make of the car that drove into the water
“It’s unknown at the present time because we don’t know the make or model of the vehicle that went off the ramp. We don’t even know if it is this missing person’s vehicle at the present time until the divers actually go into the water and locate this vehicle,” said Staff Sgt. Craig Yorke.
Icy conditions have hampered search efforts, and neither the car nor the driver has been found.
Englishtown is located 61 kilometres northwest of Sydney. The ferry runs across St. Anns Harbour connected to an underwater cable. It provides a shortcut to the Cabot Trail in northern Cape Breton.
