One man has died and another is missing after a snowmobile accident on Athabasca River near Whitecourt on Saturday.

Police say five Edmonton-area snowmobile enthusiasts were out for a ride when one man decided to run his snowmobile on open water, on the fast flowing and deep Athabasca River.

The snowmobile did not make it across the open water, and the man and his machine were submerged into the river.

A second man tried to help, but the rescuer also fell into the water.

The body of what is believed to be one of the missing males was located approximately two kilometers downstream from where he initially fell in, police say, and a search is on in hopes of locating the missing man.

A RCMP helicopter was on the scene Sunday, to assist with the search for the missing man.

One snowmobile is under water in the river and Whitecourt RCMP believe alcohol was involved in the incident.
