Patrick Brazeau To Resign, According To Tweets

Brazeau: 'I Will Step Down'
CP

UPDATE: Brazeau has confirmed his tweets were an April Fools' joke and that he "played the media."

Senator Patrick Brazeau will resign from his position, according to tweets sent from his account @TheBrazman.

The controversial independent senator tweeted "I will step down from my position!" adding that there will be an official announcement at 10 a.m. tomorrow.

There is skepticism that the tweets from Brazeau's account may have been an April Fools' prank. However if it was an April Fools prank, his timing is off as April 1 shenanigans traditionally end at noon and Brazeau's tweets came at 6:37 and 7:45 p.m.

Brazeau also did not specify which position he will step down from.

If he really is going to resign from the Senate, he'll be walking away from a $132,000 annual salary and the chance of qualifying for a full senator's pension.

Brazeau made headlines in February when he was arrested and charged with assault and sexual assault. Soon after, his fellow senators voted to put him on a forced leave of absence. He was also booted from the Tory caucus.

His next court date is set for June 10. He has pleaded not guilty to the charges.
