Curling club lost, hockey arena saved, when fire strikes small Alberta community

TWO HILLS, Alta. - A number of people had to scramble to safety when a fire broke out in a curling club in a small community east of Edmonton.

The rink in Two Hills, about 140 kilometres east of the city, was destroyed in the Tuesday night blaze.

RCMP say an event was being held at the facility when the flames broke out.

Several nearby homes were evacuated and a number of ambulances were on standby as a precaution.

Crews from three fire departments fought the blaze for several hours but could not save the club.

They did manage to stop the flames from spreading to a nearby arena.
